RGM Notebook: Hudson Struggles, Campillo Surprises

Oct 16, 2014 4:43 PM

Atlanta Braves? right-handed pitcher Tim Hudson struggled in his start Wednesday at the Florida Marlins. Hudson went only three innings and gave up six hits and four runs in the Braves? 6-5 loss to Florida, their third straight loss. Hudson was off tonight as he was topping out at 88 mph on his fastball when he is usually at 92 or so. His secondary stuff was almost non-existent and while he had good horizontal movement, his downward movement was sub par at best. With the early hook from manager Bobby Cox and drop in velocity, there could be injury concern with Hudson, so keep an eye on him for his next start. Braves? right-handed reliever Jorge Campillo kept the Braves in the game with three innings of no-hit ball. Since his call-up, he has pitched five innings of no-hit ball in long relief. He has a low 90s fastball with an above average change-up in the low 80s and an average curveball in the low to mid 70s. All of his pitches have good late movement. The numbers will level out once hitters get a look at him because his stuff isn?t dominate, but with a little work on his breaking stuff, he could fill a nice middle relief slot for the Braves.

Braves Lose Glavine To Injury

Sep 30, 2014 4:23 PM

Tom Glavine has made 672 starts in the majors. Twice, 19 years apart, he failed to record an out, according to an Associated Press report. The second time came Sunday against the reeling Nationals, when the Braves? 42-year-old lefty departed with a strained right hamstring and was charged with two runs. The reliever who replaced him, Jeff Bennett, walked in two other runs, then hit a batter who scored, too. Essentially handed a 5-0 lead, the Nationals gave nearly all of that back, then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth to beat the Braves 5-4 and end a nine-game losing streak.
